Leadership with intercultural competence

This course provides managers with practical strategies for dealing constructively and productively with the opportunities and challenges of cultural diversity.

Audience

Managers in business, not-for-profit, education and government.

Learning objectives

Participants will

  • Understand how culture influences their own feelings, thoughts and actions;
  • Learn how, through dialogue and discourse, the hidden motives of foreign cultures can be interpreted and made explicit;
  • Recognise their existing, even unconscious, intercultural skills;
  • Learn how to use cultural differences and similarities to maximise the potential of your team;
  • Develop their individual ways of working effectively in culturally diverse environments.

Content

The course spans an arc from the self to the other, from the foreign to the familiar. It is based on the premise that the diversity of cultures requires a diversity of observation, communication and intervention skills:

  • Exploring the dynamic impact of one's own (multi)cultural identity;
  • Refinement of one's own view of foreign, diverse cultural identities and their dynamics;
  • Developing effective intercultural communication by asking why;
  • Aspects of emigration and immigration and how they influence one's own leadership behaviour;
  • Interculturally competent leadership through tact, participation and decisiveness.
